Modern Foreign Languages

At Mesne Lea, we aim to stimulate children’s interest, enthusiasm and understanding of modern foreign languages. Our goal is to promote positive attitudes towards language learning throughout life and to foster intercultural understanding.
Through our French teaching, children are immersed in both the language and culture, gaining insight into French society and developing an appreciation for global diversity.
In Key Stage 2 (KS2), French is taught through discrete lessons following the KAPOW French scheme of work, which covers objectives in oracy, literacy and intercultural understanding.
In Key Stage 1 (KS1) and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children experience language and cultural activities that introduce them to the joy of learning languages.
Children are encouraged to compare their own culture with others, developing mutual respect and curiosity about the wider world. We also make cross-curricular links where possible, reinforcing knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.
We prepare pupils for the expectations of Key Stage 3 (KS3), enabling them to read, write, listen to and speak French with growing confidence. All learners have equal opportunities to access French lessons and will be supported or challenged through effective differentiation. Planning reflects the varying needs of all children, ensuring inclusivity and representation of the diverse society in which we live.
In the summer term, children in Year 6 have the opportunity to be taught by a MFL specialist from our local high school. This prepares children for the teaching they will receive in KS3.
